GURPURI Foundation: Foster Home for Children

BACKGROUND/HISTORY 
When Established:
October 27 2000
Description of Charity:Gurpuri is a registered organisation that provides a home for orphaned and underprivileged children in Malaysia. Gurpuri, "Place of the Guru", is a Sikh run welfare children's home. At present houses 42 children. The youngest being 8 years old while the 2 oldest children are of college age.

Gurpuri is headed by the affable Sukdaiv Singh.
Objective:
Besides providing the much needed shelter, food and family atmosphere for the needy children, Gurpuri's emphasis is in providing education which it feels is necessary to form the foundation for an independent life once the children leaves Gurpuri's care. To this end, Gurpuri has 11 paid tuition teachers for all subjects and all age groups. The education needs are specifically catered based on the ability of the children.

It occupies a 6 storey building nestled in the greens near Taman Zooview next to Zoo Negara, Kuala Lumpur.

Head towards Zoo Negara KL (National Zoo). If you are coming from Batu Caves/ Wangsa Maju/Genting Kelang, go a long Jalan Ulu Kelang (MRR2), pass the zoo on your left and look out for a left turn about 200 meters after the zoo. The left turn, Jalan Kasawari, is just next to Sri Inai School. A short distance after the left turn, take another left at Jalan Merpati, then a right to Jalan Merak. Gurpuri is a big white coloured building sitting on a slope. If you come from Ampang, just head towards the zoo, take the u-turn underneath the flyover at the Taman Melawati/ Taman Permata junction and follow the directions above.
